CAFS Board Names New Director
-----------------------------
NAIROBI -- On 24 October 2002, the Centre for African Family Studies
(CAFS) Board appointed Ms. Jacqui Muka as the next Director. Ms. Muka
will replace the present Director, Dr. Pape Syr Diagne, who has de-
cided not to renew his contract, to reduce his professional responsi-
bilities. She will be the Centre's first woman director since the
Centre was founded in 1975. The appointment starts officially on 15
January 2003.
Ms. Muka, is not only a qualified finance specialist but also an ex-
cellent manager. Jacqui's career spans 16 years. She started out as
an auditor with Deloitte and Touche (then Deloitte Haskins and Sells)
for a four-year period before joining CAFS in 1990 as the Budget Con-
troller at its headquarters in Nairobi. She later successively became
Finance Officer and Head of Finance Section, Senior Finance Officer
and Head of the Finance and Administration Department and finally
Deputy Director and Head of Finance and Administration Department.
Jacqui has an impressive track record with first hand knowledge of
CAFS transition from a bureaucratic to a market-oriented organisation
and she brings great energy to the directorship. Her extensive ex-
perience and commitment to market orientation will be an invaluable
asset to CAFS in the coming months and years as it moves forward to
achieving its institutional objectives.
Commenting on the appointment, Dr Pape Syr Diagne said: "She is
qualified - has what it takes to steer CAFS forward to achieve its
objectives. Jacqui is a first class manager. But she is more than
that. She is dedicated to CAFS' mission. I am very pleased that she
has been promoted to head the Centre and have every confidence that
she will perform well."
During her acceptance remarks, Jacqui said: "I consider it both an
honour and a privilege to be given the challenge to guide the Centre
through what I believe will be an exciting and at the same time
daunting path to sustainability."
Ms. Muka, 38, is a Kenyan citizen. She earned a bachelor's degree in
Commerce from the University of Nairobi, Kenya, and a Master of Sci-
ence in Management and Certificate in Public Management from Stanford
University's Graduate School of Business, California, USA. Jacqui is
also a certified public accountant. Her bilingual skills (English and
French) will put her at ease with her colleagues in Nairobi and
Lom=E9 as well as in her interactions with both Anglophone and Fran-
cophone countries.
The Centre for African Family Studies is an African institution dedi-
cated to strengthening the capacities of organisations and individu-
als working in the field of reproductive health, population and de-
velopment in order to contribute to improving the quality of life of
families in sub-Saharan Africa.
