Course Objectives:
To provide a state-of-the-art update on recent developments in vacci-
nology and to assist health professionals to design, plan, implement
and critically appraise immunisation programmes worldwide. The course
is accredited as an optional module in the tropEd Masters Programme
in International Health with the equivalent of 2.0 ECTS credit
points.
Contents:
Basics in immunology, key bacterial and viral diseases, epidemiology
of clinical trials, ethical issues in vaccine research, vaccine ty-
pes, combined vaccines, WHO vaccination programmes e.g. EPI, polio
eradication, MMR prevention, implementation of immunisation pro-
grammes, logistics incl. vaccine cold chain management, safety of
injections, vaccine registration, vaccine production including visit
of GSK production plant, adverse event monitoring and reporting,
post-marketing surveillance, future vaccine development.
Prerequisites:
Medical doctors and senior health professionals with interest and
experience in vaccinology.
