MIM/TDR/RBM/AFRO Fellowship on Project Management of TDR
DEADLINE EXTENDED TO 30 NOV 2002
NOTE: The above Fellowship is a time-limited post-graduate training
opportunity funded by TDR. The Fellowship will be in the AFRO Re-
gional Office located in Harare, Zimbabwe. The monthly stipend is
paid in US$ based on UN rates in addition to other training related
benefits. The duration of the Fellowship is initial one-year, renew-
able for a second year subject to mutual agreement.
TDR, Roll Back Malaria (RBM) and the WHO African Regional Office
(AFRO) invite nationals from the WHO African Region to apply for a 12
- 24 month fellowship on project management. The training involves a
placement in the WHO Regional Office (Harare, Zimbabwe) working with
the professional staff involved located in the Division of Communica-
ble Diseases (DCD).
Summary of the Training Programme and Activities
Under the supervision of the Director, Division of Prevention and
Control of Communicable Diseases and TDR focal point/AFRO, the incum-
bent will perform the following tasks:
1. In coordination with the technical units involved in TDR and AFRO,
assist in the administration of the MIM/TDR/RBM/AFRO Research Initia-
tive on Malaria including: preparation of call for applications, re-
view of proposals for funding, preparing and conducting MIM/TDR Task
Force meetings.
2. Assist the focal point TDR/AFRO in preparation of Technical Ser-
vices Agreement for selected projects, active follow-up of the pro-
jects' implementation, analysis of reports, disseminating the new re-
search information and promoting utilisation of the results by the
control programmes.
3. Promote TDR activities at all levels with the aim of improving
tropical disease control in Africa including preparation of research
methodology workshops, strengthen coordination and communication
among all relevant unites in AFRO, RBM and TDR/HQ.
4. Develop comprehensive computerized project database including any
already available data. Produce specific outputs from the database
(reports, circular letters, website entries, etc.), as needed.
5. Prepare research portfolio containing summaries of progress and
final reports of the research projects to ensure communicating the
results of the research projects to all concerned parties.
6. Support TDR/HQ activities in the region in coordination with AFRO
including participation in workshops, site visits and preparation of
brief reports for the MIM/TDR/AFRO initiative.
Eligibility
Applications are requested from nationals of the WHO African Region
working or involved in the Ministries of Health, academic or research
institutions and/or who recently completed a period of post-graduate
training (M.Sc. or Ph.D.). Preference will be given to candidates un-
der 40 years old, holding an advanced degree in the field of epidemi-
ology or the biological sciences. Computer skills and a good working
knowledge of English are required.

mation page of passport or other identification document).
3. One recent passport sized photograph.

institution where the applicant is employed (if applicable).
5. Educational qualifications, including place of study, date of con-
clusion and grade obtained (transcripts and photocopies of qualifica-
tions are not required but may be requested later).
6. A brief description of the applicant's current post and of the
post held immediately before.
7. A description of the applicant's current and future work inter-
ests.
8. A list of the applicant's publications and other abstracts or
presentations.
9. A letter of recommendation from two senior scientists/professors
that includes their address, telephone numbers, fax numbers and e-
mail addresses. (Please include with the application).
Applicants from countries requiring national endorsement should sub-
mit their applications through proper government channels. A copy of
all applications should be sent to the WHO Representative's Office in
their home country for information purposes.
