Second Call for Papers/Abstract
19 and 20th January, 2003
Bhopal (M.P.) India
On behalf of the Pathology Department of Gandhi Medical College, and,
The Annals of Medical Entomology, we are happy to invite you to the
1st International Seminar of Medical Entomology in the city of lakes,
Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, India. We believe that the Indian Medical En-
tomology now deserve the honour of gathering the scientists working
in the field from around the world. Invitation to Bhopal, India is
now extended to all of you.
He was Sir Ronald Ross (1857-1932) who first laid the foundation of
medical entomology when he discovered the life cycle of the malaria
parasite in mosquitoes in Secunderabad, India. Subsequently the dis-
cipline grew to such a magnitude that for the eradication of ancient
curses like malaria, filaria etc., parasitologists, toxicologists,
statisticians, vector biologists etc., realizing their responsibili-
ties towards the mankind, joined the family of medical entomologists.
Since then research on numerous insect borne diseases were carried
out in this vast country.
It was Bhopal where on the fateful intervening night of 3rd and 4th
December, 1984 the greatest disaster of most lethal MIC gas leakage
occurred causing an irreparable damage to innocent women and children
of citizen of India. The disaster has attracted the attention of sci-
entists of many disciplines.
In addition, from several points of view like history, art, scientific
tradition, geographic position etc. Bhopal has been selected, being
the ideal place for such an important international event.
No. of plenary sessions: 4 or 5
Topics of plenary sessions:
1. Mosquito Genomes: Structure, Organization, and Evolution;
2. Relative utility of dipsticks for diagnosis of malaria;
3. Disease virus transmission through mosquitoes;
4. The role of repellents in public health pest control;
5. Problems created by the breeding of Aedes mosquitoes in some den-
gue endemic areas in Sri Lanka;
6. Review of new techniques for controlling insect borne diseases in
Bangla Desh;
7. Any other topic with the permission of the Chair.
Publication of the Seminar Proceedings:
The proceedings of the seminar shall be published in The Annals of
Medical Entomology as special issue.
Post seminar field trip: One day post seminar tour on 21st January,
2003 will be arranged for visiting historical places like Tajul Ma-
saajid (Bhopal), Sanchi, a Buddha Stupa (Vidisha), and, Bhimbetka
cave paintings. The cost of tour including transport, guide charges,
lunch, tea etc. shall be Rs. 300.00 per person. Those interested
should deposit this fee to the travel desk on 19th January, 2003.
Registration: All participants and accompanying persons shall be re-
quired to register for the seminar. Registration fees shall be as
follows.
Indian Delegates: Rs.400.00
Foreign Delegates: US$ 30.00
Accompanying person with Indian Delegates: Rs.300.00
Accompanying person with Foreign Delegates : US$ 20.00
Indian Students: Rs.200.00
Foreign Students: US$ 20.00
