Vacancy: Research Physician at the Gates Malaria Partnership in Tanzania

The Gates Malaria Partnership of the London School of Hygiene and
Tropical Medicine is collaborating with Muheza Designated District
Hospital (DDH) and National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR) to
conduct practical clinical studies of treating malaria during preg-
nancy, which will be useful for clinicians and policy makers in East
Africa. The project activities will be based at Muheza DDH in Muheza
district starting March 2003. Applications are invited from qualified
East African candidates for the post below.
A post of a Research Physician is being re-advertised. The successful
candidate will take part in clinical trials and studies, initially in
pregnant women who have malaria. In addition to gaining experience in
international standard research, an appropriate post-holder will be
encouraged to register for a PhD at a local University, and will re-
ceive practical and financial help, and scientific supervision, to
make this possible. The PhD project should be within the project ac-
tivities.
Qualifications and experience:
Holder of Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree or equivalent from a recog-
nized University, and have at least 3 years practical clinical ex-
perience. Specialist knowledge of pediatrics or obstetrics would be
an advantage, as would postgraduate training in clinical research or
public health. Ability to speak Kiswahili is an important require-
ment.
Duties and responsibilities:
Undertake approved clinical research under minimal supervision from
the Project Leader Responsible for clinical care of study patients
Manage project activities when the Project Leader is away on duty
from the project site Manage and provide guidance to junior members
of the study team Perform any other duty as directed by the Project
Leader
There will be an on-call commitment.
Salary:
Will range from GBP 12,000 to GBP 14,000 a year (all inclusive), de-
pending on qualifications and experience.
