The Human Genome and Africa Conference

19-22 March 2003
Spier Estate, Stellenbosch, South Africa

The conference on the Historical, Ethical and Legal, Educational,
Bio-Medical and Bio-Technological Implications of the Human Genome
Project for Research and Development in Africa.

The South African government, together with the Wellcome Trust is
supporting the development of African scientists who wish to attend
the workshops listed below. There is an excellent line-up of speak-
ers, together with the opportunity to take a solid course in genome
bioinformatics. Funding is available for deserving scientists, espe-
cially those from poorer institutions. French speaking scientists
from within Africa are especially encouraged to apply as there is
specific support for French-speakers.

The conference is divided into five workshops:

* Genomic Research and the History and Archaeology of Africa
* Genetic Research, Ethics and the Law
* Genomic Research and Education
* Pathogen Genomics and Infectious Diseases in Africa
* Biotechnology and Life Sustainability

The ZAR 300 registration fee covers all four days of the conference
and includes teas and lunches.

There are a number of grants available to cover travel and registra-
tion fees for delegates from Africa. Applicants that require support
in order to be able to attend please indicate your interest on the
registration form.
