Revamping tertiary healthcare in Nigeria
----------------------------------------

With over 64 tertiary hospitals all over Nigeria in differing states
of functionality and constraints, the Federal Government on November
7, 2002, signed a credit purchase Agreement worth N13.5 billion (100
million US dollars) with an Austrian firm, Vamed Engineering GmbH and
Co. KG Austria. According to the Health Minister Professor Alphonsus
B.C Nwosu, the Agreement covers the equipping and upgrade of medical
facilities in 15 teaching hospitals in Nigeria as part of a phased
revamping of tertiary health care institutions.

In an "In-depth" review in The Guardian of December 15, 2002 Chukwuma
Muanya, Health reporter, examines the issues surrounding this Agree-
ment and details some of the additional challenges ahead in making
some of Nigeria?s tertiary hospitals the pride of Africa once again.

Muanya?s review is available online at

view.
