Senegal's success.... but migrant men are a different problem
-------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Colleagues

The article talking about the success of the AIDS program in Senegal
is good to hear, but Senegal is different in so many ways from South-
ern Africa.

But there is something valuable to be learned regarding the idea of
"nodes" that serve to promulgate the disease. A lot of work has been
done to address the "prostitute" as a node..... but there has been
much less success in addressing the problem of the (female) prosti-
tute's male clients. I have concluded that the role of promiscuous
men in serving as a "node" is a critical driver in the crisis in
Southern Africa.... and not made any better by the widespread prac-
tice of migrant workers, especially in mining, and the hostel system.

Migrant workers returning to their families and to their communities
are a terrible problem.... that essentially puts everyone at risk...
including those in the most remote areas.

EVERYONE needs to be aware of the potential for HIV-AIDS virus trans-
mission.... and everyone needs to be taught how some degree of pro-
tection can be had

Sincerely,

Peter Burgess
