Dear friends:
GPD: Global Prevention Day
We received a large number of fascinating comments about the global
prevention day, all of them positive. It is crazy, but why cannot we
execute a global prevention day? We could do this on Hippocrates's
birthday!!
Eric Marler had a neat idea. There is a UN mechanism for designating
global days. Gabriel Gulis suggested that prevention might target
global minority health as many of the issues of gypsies in Slovakia
are the same as for Aborigines in Australia. He followed this up
questioning what language that this would be presented. Muninjaya is
ready to start in Bali, and suggested linking this with the health
departments as well. Trevor Orchard's idea was that we somehow get a
global linkage of people, some type of hands across the world for
prevention which can only be done on the web. Shai Linn had a great
idea of doing this annually, covering different themes each year, and
to bring major journals into this effort. Andrew Kuznetsov was con-
cerned as to how the people would be chosen to join. There were quite
mixed reviews as to the involvement of the WHO. Some people thought
that we should get them involved immediately; others thought that
getting involved with the WHO with an idea such as this could turn
into a mine field with our ideas blown up. Several people suggested
the involvement of CNN, the Discovery station, educational TV.
Marcelo Sosa suggested Tevlevision Educativa Iberoamericana which
covers 160 Ibero-American universities.
Marcelo felt bad that he did not know Ted Turner, but did fool around
a little bit with Jane Fonda!!
We have been talking with everyone and wanted to present a general
plan:
Goals of GPD, to increase global awareness of prevention, and to col-
lect outstanding lectures world wide that can be used in classrooms.
Time for the Supercourse Survivor Show!!
There could be an introduction by the MOH. We envision 4 lectures per
country. These will be very prestigious lectures. There will be two
modes of presentation. The first on television and/or radio for an
hour, in the local language, and the second on the Internet in the
Supercourse in English. There will be one leader per country and s/he
will select the people who give a lecture.
It is likely that the top people in the country will want to present
nationwide.
The first talk would be a state of health of the country, by the co-
ordinator in the country. This would be like Eugene Shubnikov s coun-
try profiles for the FSU:

plus an overview of telepreventive medicine. The following three lec-
tures will cover various aspects of prevention.
We would appreciate your suggestions, please write to

We would appreciate any thoughts that you might have.
University of Pittsburgh News: Dr. Lewis H. Kuller Festschrift.
Dr. Kuller is a world renowned cardiovascular epidemiologist at the
University of Pittsburgh, and my mentor (REL). He has made signifi-
cant contributions in many different disciplines including Cardiovas-
cular Disease, Women s Health, Aging, Cancer, and Inflammation and
Chronic diseases. He has been the mentor to many of us at the Univer-
sity of Pittsburgh showing us the love, excitement and power of epi-
demiology. He has supported many students and faculty. Because of him
we grew, and became epidemiologists. We are celebrating his brilliant
30 year career at the Department of Epidemiology, University of
Pittsburgh with a Festschrift on March 28 and 29. To find out more,
