By Gloria Katusiime, Kampala
Phase1 of the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI) and Uganda
Virus Research Institute (UVRI) vaccination trial is set to begin
within the next few weeks.
Addressing journalists Tuesday, the principle investigator in the
trial, Dr. Pontiano Kaleebu said the first vaccination should be car-
ried out in the next week.
The vaccine for the prevention of HIV infection (DNA-MVA) has been
developed at the Uganda virus research institute in Entebbe. The aim
of the trial is to test for its safety and immunogenicity.
This same vaccine is currently being tested in Kenya and the United
Kingdom.
The IAVI-UVRI vaccination trial is the second to be carried out in
Uganda after the first ALVAC trial by the Joint Clinical Research
Centre ended in 2001.
Fifty volunteers are to enrol for the vaccination trial which is ex-
pected to last for 18 months.
Nzeera Ketter a consultant with IAVI added that this trial is just
the beginning of a number of other trials to be carried out in Af-
rica. Another trial is already in the pipeline to cover East and
Southern Africa.
