An intensive two-week residential course for health professionals in
the field of family planning, sexual and reproductive health.

International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) and Deutsche Ge-
sellschaft für Technische Zusammenarbeit (GTZ)

INTRODUCTION

In the past decade the global community has achieved a series of in-
ternational consensus agreements around human rights and development.
This includes the Cairo Conference on Population and Development
(ICPD) in 1994, where some 179 countries adopted a 20-year Programme
of Action to stabilize the world?s population and invest in people
and better meet their health and development needs. The agreed defi-
nition of reproductive health at Cairo marked a quantum leap from de-
mographically motivated goals and approaches of the past, to a focus
on the needs and rights of individuals. Since 1994 there have been
some significant legal, policy and programmatic changes in many coun-
tries to improve the provision of, and access to sexual and reproduc-
tive health. New strategies have been created and unprecedented col-
laborative partnerships have been developed. However, as the follow-
up five-year review of Cairo in 1999, and the Beijing plus five con-
ference in 2000 showed, there is still much to be done. This includes
the high unmet contraceptive needs in many parts of the developing
world, maternal mortality rates, the impact of unsafe abortion, gen-
der issues, young people?s sexual and reproductive health, as well as
the HIV/AIDS pandemic. This course aims to address many of these key
issues and challenges. Drawing on a spectrum of international experts
and the experience from previous Cambridge Courses, IPPF has devised
a dynamic two-week curriculum which combines a brief introduction to
the developments, priorities and challenges we face in the providing
sexual and reproductive health, together with an opportunity to dis-
cuss key programme areas in more depth. Central to our approach on
the course is an interactive learning environment with participation
as key to our methodology.

BY THE END OF THE COURSE...

* You will be familiar with the major international developments and
programme priorities in areas of sexual and reproductive health.
* You will have enhanced your understanding of the concepts of sexual
and reproductive health and of the methods, techniques and services
that contribute to good reproductive health.
* You will have had the opportunity to take part in a number of spe-
cialist workshops on key topics exploring in-depth, for example ado-
lescent sexual and reproductive health and rights, HIV/AIDS, gender,
quality of care, safe motherhood, project development and advocacy.
* You will have visited IPPF?s Headquarters in London and a national
NGO working in sexual and reproductive health with a chance to inter-
act and have discussions with project staff.
* You will have benefited from the professional exchange with fellow
participants, and have had an opportunity to develop strategies col-
laboratively to overcome problems you have identified in the field.

COURSE ORGANIZATION

The intensive course is taught in English by experienced specialists
from the IPPF and GTZ, as well as faculty members from various aca-
demic institutions and international experts (e.g. WHO, UNAIDS). Tui-
tion comprises a mixture of lectures, discussions, working groups,
audiovisual presentations and individual exercises. A core team of
facilitators will be on hand to direct the course. Participants will
be encouraged to actively draw on their own experiences and share
programme initiatives. A certificate of attendance is awarded at the
end of the course.

PARTICIPANTS AND FEES

Between 25 and 35 professionals working in the field of family plan-
ning, health, population, demography, sexual and reproductive health
in both developing and developed countries who wish to deepen their
understanding on a broad range of issues from both a theoretical and
programmatic viewpoint. This course is useful for both those new to
the field of sexual and reproductive health, but also to experienced
health professionals who want to consolidate or increase their knowl-
edge on a range of issues as the course includes the latest programme
approaches and methodologies. Participants must be fluent in English.
The fees are £2,300 which covers tuition, extensive course materials,
accommodation, breakfast, lunch and some dinners. Accommodation is
single room only, with bathroom and kitchen facilities in Lucy Caven-
dish College, Cambridge, UK. The round trip airfare and train/coach
fare to and from Cambridge, insurance, visas and incidental expenses
are the responsibility of participants. Participants are advised to
seek funding from local agencies such as the British Council, WHO,
UNFPA and other donors/sources.

ORGANIZERS

IPPF
The International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) is the world?s
largest voluntary organization working through more than 150 Family
Planning Associations worldwide and in at least 180 countries for
the sexual and reproductive health, choices and rights of women, men
and young people. The Federation also collaborates with other volun-
tary, inter-governmental and UN organizations which share its con-
cerns for sexual and reproductive health and well-being including
GTZ, UNFPA, The World Health Organization, the World Bank and UNICEF.

GTZ
The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Technische Zusammenarbeit (GTZ) is an
executive agency based in Germany. It is commissioned by the German
Government to contribute its know-how and expertise to the planning
and implementation of technical co-operation projects which are car-
ried out in collaboration with organizations in partner countries.
The main services offered by GTZ are in the areas of project plan-
ning, monitoring and evaluation; technical advisory services; commu-
nity and needs-orientated approaches.

VENUE

Cambridge is a historic university town built around the river Cam.
It is about 50 miles from London and there are good train links from
London, as well as direct coach links from Gatwick, Heathrow and
Stansted airports. Lucy Cavendish College was founded in 1965 for the
specific advance of women?s education. Noted for its friendly and re-
laxed atmosphere, the Victorian buildings which comprise the college
are set in nearly three acres of tree-lined gardens and ten minutes
walk from the centre of Cambridge.

Due to the volume of applications received for this course, partici-
pants are asked to complete the application and return it by 30 April
2003 to the address below. A non-refundable deposit of £500 and two
passport-sized photographs are also required by this date to ensure
that a place on the course is held. This deposit will be off-set
against the full course fees due by 4 July 2003. Applications will
close as soon as all the places are allocated. In addition, please
include with this application form a statement of 200 words on a
separate piece of paper explaining why you wish to take this course
and how it will be relevant to your professional work and develop-
ment.
