Microbicides e-Advocacy Project Manager

Health and Development Networks (HDN) is a non-profit organization
with the mission to mobilise a more effective response to HIV/AIDS,
TB and Malaria and other health-and-development-related issues by im-
proving information, communication and the quality of debate. Further

HDN is seeking a talented and committed professional to join us in
the following area:

Project Manager (10 month contract; part-time; renewable)
Ref: HDNAP04/03

The HDN Microbicides E-Advocacy Project has been on-going since 2001.
The project aims to report on local, regional and international ef-
forts to advocate for prevention options for women and to facilitate
virtual discussion and debate around microbicide research in popular
discourses around HIV/AIDS. The Project Manager will co-ordinate and
implement the project, manage a small international team of writers
and engage in international advocacy efforts - in collaboration with
the Global Campaign for Microbicides.

Application closing date: 14 March 2003

Main areas of work:
- Overall project implementation and management
- Managing a team of country-based writers (Key Correspondents) with
individual workplans
- Further development of detailed project workplan and budget
- Monitoring project implementation (incl. finance, procurement etc.)
- Preparing reports on project progress for internal and external
purposes
- Providing technical guidance as needed
- Liaison with key project stakeholders
- Presentation of project at conferences/meetings
- Liaison with conference organizers and media bodies
- Coordinating advocacy efforts
- Close collaboration with other HDN project managers and team

Desirable skills/background:
- Basic understanding of microbicides and a broad understanding of
HIV/AIDS and/or other health-related issues
- Experience working in the HIV/AIDS field
- Excellent command of written and spoken English
- Experience in report-writing, including for the media
- Must be flexible and able to work on own initiative but also as
part of a team
- Excellent management, administrative and organizational skills
- Good interpersonal and proven management skills in multicultural
teams
- Good understanding of email discussion forums
- Understanding of HIV-related advocacy, media outreach and communi-
cation through e-mail
- Familiarity with international conferences and other events
- Advanced computer skills
- Good research/collation skills
- Must be able to interact effectively with external contacts
- Able to work autonomously and travel

Relevant qualifications:
- At least four years experience in the HIV/AIDS field
- Bachelor or masters degree in relevant field
- Excellent project planning, management, and budget skills
- Good track record in managing projects
- Experience of working with the media
- Presentation and facilitation skills
- Prior editing experience favourable
- Experience as an HDN Key Correspondent favourable

Conditions - 50% @ 20 hours per week, competitive salary

Location - HDN offices in Chiang Mai or in Pretoria. Some flexibility
possible.

Timeframe - ASAP to December 2003 (renewable)
