The Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases
(TDR) invites applications for a 12-month fellowship concerning the
production of interactive training and distance learning packages.
The training will involve a short placement in TDR Headquarters (Ge-
neva), working closely with professional staff in the TDR Communica-
tions Unit, and a longer-duration placement working at Wellcome Trust
headquarters in London. Following completion of the training pro-
gramme, the Fellow is expected to return to the home institute and
make full use of both the training, technology and products produced
during the term of the Fellowship, and to actively promote the use of
all such products, as well as wide application of remote or stand-
alone learning elements and packages in their home country.
Summary of the Training Programme and Activities
Under the supervision of specialist TDR and Wellcome Trust staff, the
Fellow will be involved in the following activities:
* Assisting in the work of the TDR Communications unit, with particu-
lar emphasis on electronic publishing of Information, Education and
Communications (IEC) materials and resources.
* Comprehensive work on the production of electronically-published
interactive IEC products, especially compact discs, to include.
* Taking a lead role in project management;
* Scoping, identifying and locating basic resources and specialised
content;
* Writing new content and designing of content to suit target audi-
ence(s);
* Helping ensure accuracy and quality of content;
* Contributing to production of images (still and moving), anima-
tions, graphics, etc;
* Assisting and advising in the structured learning aspects;
* Helping pre-test and de-bug products.
* Identifying relevant and useful sources of basic resources and com-
pile an annotated database for use by TDR and the Wellcome Trust.
* Liaising with other similar operations and agencies in London, Ge-
neva and elsewhere and help establish collaborative working arrange-
ments and partnerships.
* Promoting TDR activities at all levels with the aim of improving
tropical disease research in their home nations, including prepara-
tion of electronically-published teaching materials, technology ex-
change and transfer, workshop planning, and to help strengthen coor-
dination and communication among all relevant agencies and institu-
tions in their home country and region.
* Supporting TDR/HQ activities in the region as requested by TDR/HQ,
including preparation of reports for TDR's Research Strengthening
Group (RSG), Scientific & Technical Advisory Committee (STAC), and
the Joint Coordinating Board (JCB).
Conditions
The Fellowship will be a time-limited, post-graduate training oppor-
tunity funded by TDR within the programme's Research Capacity
Strengthening initiatives. The Fellowship will be located at work
stations as specified. The monthly stipend will be set at US$ (to be
decided) per month, in addition to other minor benefits. Interna-
tional travel and other extraneous travel costs will be determined by
and the responsibility of TDR, decided in collaboration with the
Wellcome Trust. The Fellowship is planned to start as soon as possi-
ble, at a date to be negotiated.
Eligibility
Applications are requested from nationals of developing countries,
particular those where TDR target disease are endemic. Individuals
should be employed or involved in Ministries of Health, academic or
research institutions, or non-governmental organisations active in
the health education and training fields.
They should hold a graduate qualification in communications, health
education or similar discipline, or have equivalent experience in the
clear and effective packaging and presentation of information.
Preference will be given to candidates under 40 years old holding an
advanced (Master's level) degree in the their field of expertise,
which should preferably be in the life sciences or medicine.
Candidates should have broad experience in scientific or medical
writing, be well-organised, able to work to deadlines and to work
well in a multicultural team environment. The ability to conceive,
write and create information and educational material tailored to
specific audiences is essential.
Multimedia skills would be an asset, in particular the ability to
work in cross-platform computerised environments. Knowledge of stan-
dard multimedia production software would also be advantageous.
An excellent knowledge of English, both written and spoken, is a pre-
requisite and a working knowledge of French would be an asset. Candi-
dates should ideally have previous experience in conceptualising, re-
search, writing, compiling and packaging health education and train-
ing materials.

* Educational qualifications, including place of study, date of con-
clusion and grade obtained (transcripts and photocopies of qualifica-
tions are not required but may be requested later).
* A brief description of the applicant's current post and of the post
held immediately before.
* A description of the applicant's current and future work interests.
* A list of the applicant's publications and other abstracts or pres-
entations.
* A letter of recommendation from two senior scientists/professors
that includes their address, telephone and fax numbers and e-mail ad-
dresses. (Please include with the application).
* A brief explanation of how this Fellowship and the products that
you will learn to develop and produce will be of use in your future
work and disease research and control efforts in your country.
Applicants from countries requiring national endorsement should sub-
mit their applications through proper government channels. A copy of
all applications should be sent to the WHO Representative's Office in
their home country for information purposes.
