WHO reports first probable case of SARS in Africa
-------------------------------------------------

As at 11 April 2003, the WHO has reported only one (1) probable case
of the globally raging atypical pneumonic disease named Severe Acute
Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). The cumulative global total of reported
probable cases is 2890.

Given the huge information gap, the dominant health-seeking behaviour
preference for traditional medical care and the weak disease surveil-
lance and reporting structures in most African health systems, it is
debatable if the one reported case in South Africa is a true reflec-
tion of the incidence of SARS in Africa to-date.
