Malaria Research Training Programme
-----------------------------------

Short Course Series
Immunological Aspects of Malaria

15th - 28th June 2003, Harare, Zimbabwe

Blair Research Institute
Biomedical Research and Training Institute and
Johns Hopkins University

Course Objective:
To expose course participants to immunological aspects of malaria and
prepare them for participation in malaria research programmes.

Course outline and duration:
The course will be presented in a series of preparatory lectures fol-
lowed by detailed analysis of various modules each of which will deal
with specific programmatic aspects that relate to malaria immunology.
It will prepare students technically to maintain P. falciparum ma-
laria in culture, to establish and maintain malaria vector as well as
non-vector species and to carry out various immunologial techniques.
Procedures such as taking blood from human donors, microscopic and
rapid diagnosis of parasites, identification of parasites to species
and stage level, detection of specific malaria antibodies and extrac-
tion and purification of parasite DNA will also be taught. Lectures
on malaria epidemiology will emphasize the features of various trans-
mission profiles, clinical characteristics of malaria under such con-
ditions and other indicators of morbidity.

The course contents will include:

1. Development of technical proficiencies to maintain and study P.
falciparum in vitro.
2. Use of molecular and immunological techniques in elaborating immu-
nological responses in people from areas of differing malaria en-
demic characteristics.
3. The association between transmission profiles and clinical charac-
teristics of malaria infection.
4. Malaria immunological data management, analysis and its use.
5. Research ethics in malaria immunology.

The course will extend over a period of 2 weeks and participants will
be evaluated through a laboratory practical test, short answer writ-
ten test and a take-home paper based on the materials presented. Suc-
cessful candidates will be awarded a certificate of competency.

Participants:
Research scientists with an interest in malaria, laboratory technolo-
gists/technicians, university students and other health personnel.
Participants should have either:
* Medical or Scientific degree
* City and Guilds (Advanced) Technological diploma and malaria re
lated field experience
* Higher National Diploma and malaria related field experience
* Associate degree or equivalent with appropriate course credits

Financing:
There are currently 10 fellowships available to eligible candidates,
however those with their own sponsorship are urged to apply. Course
costs are approximately US$ 1,500 inclusive of tuition, accommoda-
tion, meals as well as local travel and exclusive of airfares.
