Postgraduate Training Fellowship in Medical Statistics or Epidemiology
----------------------------------------------------------------------
for African Scientists

The MRC Tropical Epidemiology Group (TEG) forms part of the Infec-
tious Disease Epidemiology Unit (IDEU) at the London School of Hy-
giene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM). The TEG has recently secured
funding from the UK Medical Research Council for three postgraduate
training fellowships which are to be awarded during the next five
years. Each of these two-year fellowships will comprise one year's
study for the Master of Science degree in either medical statistics
or epidemiology followed by a one-year professional attachment. This
support is intended to foster excellence in the field of medical sta-
tistics and epidemiology in sub-Saharan Africa.

The fellowship will provide costs for fees, stipend and return air
travel. MSc studies will be undertaken at the London School of Hy-
giene and Tropical Medicine, and the professional attachment will be
based at one of the African centres associated with the TEG research
programme. During the professional attachment, training fellows will
develop their skills by working on specific research studies with
guidance and support from TEG staff.

An eligible candidate will:
* Be resident in and a national of a country in sub-Saharan Africa.
* Be in possession of a good first degree with a background in mathe-
matics, statistics or a related subject.
* Have some work experience in medical statistics or epidemiology.

Support will not be given as a supplement to other funding, nor to
students who are eligible for MSc funding through their employer.

Application can be made for this fellowship alongside application for
the MSc course at LSHTM. Applicants should submit a full CV and two
references (which may be the same as the MSc references). Applica-
tions must be received by 30th June 2003.
