RFI: Skills Substitutions of Health Workers
-------------------------------------------

Hello,

Greetings.

The WHO is trying to find and collate information on experiences with
countries that have produced health staff/cadres with specific skills
for health interventions, and who have substituted for regular inter-
nationally recognized health cadres (e.g. Doctors & Nurses etc.) in
which case a shorter period of training was used. [In Mozambique for
example, we understand a 3-year programme has been started to train
medical assistants (assistant medical officers) to perform surgical
interventions in underserved areas. Similar programmes (e.g. Assis-
tant medical Officers, Clinical Officers, medical Assistants, Surgi-
cal technicians etc.) we understand, have been tried in other coun-
tries (Tanzania, Malawi, Burkina Faso, and Zambia)].

Our aim is to identify and describe experiences with substitutions of
skills in the health care workforce in African countries. Any stud-
ies, evaluations of such cadres are requested. Hardcopies are welcome
and will cover cost of postage/courier though of course e-copies will
be better. Also any information as to where such data may be avail-
able will also help. Please send responses to my personal e-mail ad-
dress below.

Thanks,
