RFI: Research on Glucose 6 phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency (2)
-----------------------------------------------------------------

Dear colleague,

GSPD deficiency examination can only be done through the assistance
of a laboratory by doing the test with a specialist in Haematology.
The condition may be detected early in childhood or infancy just like
what you would discover in a child who is a sickler. I will recommend
at your level to see a haematologist to work with you. As the condi-
tion is sex linked you should concentrate on males (infants and chil-
dren).

In clinical practice it is always an incidental finding where a male
infant haemolyses after initial treatment with a sulfa compound like
cotrimoxazole or SP as in Fansidar, Metakelfin, Orodar etc. according
to the brands of SP you have in your country. Eating fava beans has
also been known to cause haemolysis in patients with GSPD deficiency.

In a nutshell that is the advice I can give you.
