Centre for Innovation Against Malaria (CIAM), MRC Laboratories 
The Gambia

The MRC Laboratories, The Gambia is the Council's largest establish-
ment conducting medical research in a developing country. The Unit 
aims to improve the health of people in low-income countries by ex-
cellence in multi-disciplinary research programmes.

CIAM's objective is to reduce the burden of malaria and improve the 
health and well being of West Africans through the implementation and 
evaluation of innovative, effective and appropriate health promotion 
activities. We are looking for someone with drive and enthusiasm to 
lead and guide CIAM in consultation with the Steering Committee and 
staff of the MRC and the Gates Malaria Partnership.

You will have a higher degree or equivalent, in a health related 
field, preferably public health, demonstrable experience in develop-
ing, implementing and evaluating public health programmes in Africa 
with a minimum of 5 years experience in the health sector at a senior 
level. You must have proven leadership, management, communication, 
organizational and budget management skills, experience supervising 
staff, computer literacy and the ability to make decisions and work 
under pressure. Previous experience of obtaining outside funding, ex-
perience of working in partnership with government and other institu-
tions and the ability to teach to a variety of audiences is a pre-
requisite. The ability to write and speak French and have a record of 
research publications would be an advantage.

The appointment, which is funded by the Gates Malaria Partnership, is 
to 31st December 2005 in the first instance.

The total salary package for the post, which is in Occupational Group 
D3M, will be approximately 278,000 Dalasis per annum. For displaced 
staff the package will include rent-free furnished accommodation, 
flights and shipment of personal effects. The salaries for Group D 
staff are currently under review.
