Music Therapy International - Newsletter June 2003
--------------------------------------------------
Dear Friends,
Hello and please see this exciting newsletter put out monthly by Mu-
sic Therapy International (MTI), located in the US and with programs
existing or planned in Kenya and other parts of Africa. MTI works in
Kenya in particular, and is focused on the healing powers of music
(music as therapy), in particular for children struggling with trau-
mas such as migration, displacement, and the effects of HIV/AIDS.
Please see some exciting research going on (below) in this field, as
well as about events planned in Kenya and a trip there to examine
traditional and modern healthcare.
With greatest thanks and all best wishes,
Janet Feldman

Research on Music and Healing:
As you all know, one of the objectives of MTI includes the promotion
of research in traditional music healing and music therapies in Af-
rica, so this month, MTI collaborated another research on music and
healing among the Taita people of Kenya. The research was carried out
by Brandon Judge of The University of Puget Sound, a national liberal
arts and sciences college in Tacoma, Washington in the USA. Brandon
has just completed his qualitative research on music and healing
among the Taita culture. His research findings will be available very
soon. Brandon has very interesting anecdotes on how music is used in
healing among the Taita people of Kenya. Just to quote one of Bran-
don's expressions "....so there is potential for some unexplored ter-
rain and return projects..." Brandon can be reached at
mailto:bjudge@ups.edu
Organizational Progress:
This Month, Sarah Fulton, the Country Director of Music Therapy Pro-
grams in Kenya, has been working tirelessly and meeting potential
sponsors of MTI programs living in Colorado, for Mother Theresa Chil-
dren's Home and the Pediatric Oncology Unit at Kenyatta National Hos-
pital in Nairobi. Things are moving on very well. You are welcome to
contribute ideas on how MTI's programs can be more successful in the
future. Let's work together: we need you.
This month, Steven Adamski and Eric Doebel of MTI have teamed up Mr.
Steven Pie in Cleveland to Make more music for the children.
Future Breakthrough:
December 26, 2003 - January 6, 2004 MTI is proud to be one of the co-
sponsors of Professor Joe Moreno on a major educational endeavor on
music therapy awareness workshop in Kenya.
You are cordially invited to join Joseph Moreno, MT-BC, PROFESSOR
