-------------------------------------------------------------------
Invitation to Participate
Dear All,
Special Session on HIV/AIDS, Malaria & TB at the African Union Sum-
mit, 10 July 1:30 - 4:45 Maputo time, 12:30 pm - 3:50 pm, London time
(BST)
The African Union Summit in Maputo will link to the rest of the world
using the latest communication technologies in the first ever open
public forum with African heads of state on 10 July. Please join us
at http://www.ihn.info for a live webcast, online survey and online
discussion forum of this important event.
HIV/AIDS, Malaria and TB represent Africa's biggest health problem.
They are no longer just a health issue for those who govern Africa.
Now African leaders openly acknowledge the pandemic is putting Af-
rica's economies into reverse and affecting all aspects of society on
the continent.
The second African Union Summit in Maputo includes the World Forum on
Health and Development on July 10, bringing together African heads of
state and global partners (The World Bank, Gates Foundation, US Gov-
ernment, Global Fund, DFID, Interactive Health Network, Exchange and
others) in order to seal a joint commitment on scaling up action
against HIV/AIDS, Malaria and TB in Africa.
This is a groundbreaking event for African leaders and their interna-
tional partners. The novel aspect of this meeting is that it will be
debated worldwide, from sites in Africa, Europe and the US, and
broadcast internationally using the latest communications technology.
This is the first time that such meetings of the African Union have
been held in open session.
The UK-based Interactive Health Network, a non-profit organisation
working in health communication, is organising the Forum on behalf of
the Government of Mozambique and the African Union using up-to-the-
minute internet and satellite technologies. The meeting will be held
at sites in Maputo, London (hosted at the Department for Interna-
tional Development), Geneva, Durban, Nairobi, New York and Washington
DC. It will be broadcast live on radio and television and webcast on
the internet.
Key personalities in the global discussion will include:
President Joaquim Chissano of Mozambique, incoming President of the
African Union
Mrs Graca Machel (Moderator of the Forum)
Kofi Annan, UN Secretary General
Richard Feachem, Executive Director of the Global Fund for AIDS, TB
and Malaria
President Olusegun Obasanjo of Nigeria, Chairman of NEPAD
Dr Peter Piot, Executive Director, UNAIDS
Dr Fatoumata Nafo-Traoré, Director, Roll Back Malaria, WHO
Carol Bellamy, Executive Director, UNICEF

ference links will be used, including WorldSpace radio. The two hour
discussion will be streamed on the web and rebroadcast on radio and
television stations in Africa.
The Interactive Health Network is a non-profit organisation located
in London which employs information and communications technology
(ICTs) for health and development. We organise regular international
videoconferences, one of our major foci being on health information
and education in Africa. We are partnering for this event with the
World Bank Institute's Global Development Learning Network, The Nel-
son Mandela School of Medicine, The South African Medical Research
Council, and the African Medical and Research Foundation (AMREF) on
