Minnesota International Health Volunteers (MIHV) has worked in Uganda
for the past 10 years in a very underserved district (Ssembabule) and
has had a successful HIV/AIDS and nutrition project there. We helped
a local NGO get started (the Ssembabule AIDS Counseling Services) and
currently have 8 HIV/AIDS counselors who put on 2-3 day retreats re-
lated to HIV/AIDS and nutrition.

The retreats are attended by people living with HIV/AIDS along with
their caretakers, and the clients are taught about eating a nutri-
tious diet; HIV/AIDS prevention; palliative care; simple exercises
they can do to prevent bedsores; and a session on planting community
gardens. They are also given seeds and roots to start the community
gardens, and some initial technical assistance is provided. A manual
has been developed in the Luganda language and we have received ex-
cellent feedback on the retreats. Our funding for this particular
project is just about up, so if any of you know of additional funders
who may be interested, please let me know. We have 15 Ugandan staff
members and have an excellent core team that are also available to
train others in this area. Thanks!
