West African Cross Border Project Targets Migrants
--------------------------------------------------
The PSAMAO (Prévention du SIDA sur les Axes Migratoire de l'Afrique
de l'Ouest) component of the USAID-funded Population Services Inter-
national affiliate, Santé Familiale et Prévention du SIDA, targets
mobile populations such as truck drivers, commercial sex workers and
seasonal workers in six countries in West Africa.
PSAMAO is an excellent example of regional programming, with regional
materials, cross-fertilization and learning and emphasis on cross-
border sites and communities. The campaign's major elements -- tele-
vision, billboards, pamphlets and peer education --are coherently
interlinked and branded, with a common look and feel. The country
projects have a common, recognizable approach, with shared materials
and peer education strategies.
In the mid-term review, the number of regular and occasional partners
among truckers was down significantly and condom use increased 31%
with occasional partners.
