Report: Social Marketing of Impregnated Mosquito Nets in Zimbabwe
-----------------------------------------------------------------

This report documents the implementation and results of a 4-month ma-
laria control project implemented by Population Services Interna-
tional in Zimbabwe from March to July, 1997. It draws on an independ-
ent, population-based survey of knowledge, attitudes and practices
related to malaria in the project areas at the end of the interven-
tion period, together with sales and cost data.

Most purpose-level indicators were achieved: 15,000 Supanet brand
nets were sold; 23% of adults in targeted areas reported having at
least one net installed; 26% of women and 16% of children reported
sleeping under a net. Increases in knowledge and awareness were
achieved for most issues, although targets had been unrealistic for
such a short-term intervention.

The project was deemed successful in increasing access to affordable
nets among the target population, in part by working with commercial
farms. The evaluation will be used to design a follow-on expanded
project, notably by focusing communications messages and targeting
sales strategies to increase coverage of high-risk groups.
