Zimbabwean women believe wife beating is OK (4)
-----------------------------------------------

Dear all,

Such findings are not limited to Zimbabwe.

Research done by investigators at the Rakai Project in rural Uganda
indicates that similar attitudes are prevalent in our study popula-
tion. In a survey of 5,109 women of reproductive age and a corre-
sponding sample of 3,881 men aged 1559 years (who were married or in
active partnerships at the time of interview), it was found that most
respondents 70% of men and 90% of women viewed beating of the
wife or female partner as justifiable in some circumstances, posing a
central challenge to preventing violence in such settings.
