Leather Condom Pouch Now Standard Military Issue in Eritrea
-----------------------------------------------------------

Standard issue equipment belts worn by soldiers in Eritrea in-
clude hand grenades, ammunition cases, canteens, and now-thanks
to Population Services International (PSI) -a leather condom
pouch. The distribution of the condom pouch follows PSI/Eritrea's
massive HIV/AIDS awareness-raising campaign over the past year
with the entire Eritrean Defense Force. The military, as one of
several high-risk groups in Eritrea, ranks second highest in HIV
prevalence, after commercial sex workers.

AIDS is a battle to be fought with different weapons, so both men
and women in the Eritrean military will be required to wear the
condom pouch. Production of the locally-made pouches was made
possible through funding from the U.S. Department of Defense. For
