The Ethiopian government started handing out anti-malaria drugs
on Wednesday to people in three regions in an effort to avoid a
repeat of an outbreak last summer that killed more than 4,000
people.
Heavy rains on the heels of severe drought have raised the spec-
tre of a bad epidemic this year. The drought left millions weak-
ened by malnutrition - about 13 million Ethiopians are at risk of
starvation - and the rains are providing an ideal environment for
mosquitoes.
"This year we face the risk of a massive malaria epidemic, which
could severely hit women and children already vulnerable after
the drought and the resulting humanitarian crisis," UNICEF coun-
try representative Bjorn Ljungqvist said.
An Ethiopian official said last month that many of the people who
died in the summer outbreak in the country's north perished be-
cause of the unavailability of anti-malaria medicine
(Reuters/ReliefWeb, Oct. 8).
