Nigerian Radio Campaign Generates Safe Behavior
-----------------------------------------------

The Society for Family Health, Nigerian affiliate of Population
Services International, has harnessed the power of radio to
broadcast sexually-transmitted infection prevention and safer sex
messages. As part of a behavior change campaign targeting sexu-
ally active men and women aged 18-34, the radio program "Future
Dreams" was broadcast in nine Nigerian languages and on 42 radio
stations to promote, among other things, abstinence or consistent
condom use, condom negotiation skills and self-efficacy.

The campaign explored four themes: "future fertility," "sexual
past," "we can negotiate," and "I'm not embarrassed." The mes-
sages in "Future Dreams" were crafted with great care from a
solid base of research material and all messages were tested and
retested by trained research personnel. Results were impressive,
with knowledge and behavior data showing increased knowledge and
significantly safer behavior patterns among those who had lis-
tened to the campaign compared to those who had not been exposed.
