Maternal Deaths Disproportionately High in Developing Countries (2)
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Claudio and all,
Nice to read your nice piece on maternal mortality. Sounded de-
javu! Or is that the word?
On a more serious note:
Our countries need to be sensitized on these countless scandalous
tragic haemorrhages on probably the most critical human resource:
women. It would appear to me that the issues and possible ap-
proaches to the problem have been well articulated by many re-
searchers and practitioners in the area. What is needed is a com-
mitment by all concerned to address the issues in a practical,
concerted and consistent way.
In the short term our countries need to address urgently the
crumbling health infrastructure and deal with the day today
causes of these needless scandalous deaths. In the medium and
long term we need to give our girl children the biggest VACCINE
against this scourge: that is FREE education up to at least the
10th grade! And we need to SELL the information and tested, evi-
dence-based ideas to our communities and decision-makers includ-
ing our ministers of health, finance, members of parliament and
women activists. This is not my specialty but I hope this can
generate some interesting debate.
Best regards,
James K Tumwine
