October 27, 2003 Architecture for Humanity and The Royal In-
stitute of British Architects proudly present OUTREACH: Design
Ideas for a Mobile HIV/AIDS Health Clinic for Africa, the criti-
cally-acclaimed exhibition showcasing winning and selected en-
tries from Architecture for Humanity's recent international de-
sign competition. This exhibit is made possible thanks to the
generous support of Virgin Atlantic.
In May 2002, Architecture for Humanity, a nonprofit organiza-
tion, challenged architects and designers to respond to the
mounting HIV/AIDS crisis in Sub-Saharan Africa, where nearly
three-quarters of the world's AIDS population resides. Designers
were asked to develop schemes for mobile medical unit to provide
basic healthcare as well as HIV/AIDS testing, prevention, treat-
ment and education to underserved populations in the region.
More than 530 teams representing 51 nations responded, and an
international jury of architects and medical professionals met
in New York to select four finalists and eight honorary men-
tions. The competition finalists were:
* Mads Hansen, Mikkel Bedholm and Jan Sondergaard, KHRAS, Virum,
Denmark (1st Place)
* Brendan Harnett and Michelle Myers, Rensselaer Polytechnic In-
stitute, Troy, NY, USA (2nd Place)
* Heide Schuster and Wilfried Hofmann, Dortmund, Germany (3rd
Place)
* Gaston Tolila and Nicholas Gilliland, Paris, France (Founders
Award)
In addition to the winning schemes, more than thirty projects
will be on display in the RIBA galleries. The projects showcase
a remarkable range of talent and innovation, from South Africa-
base Technikon Pretoria's clinic-in-a-suitcase, to London-based
JAS Architects' telescoping frame system, to dirigible-inspired
designs from teams in San Francisco, USA and Goettingen, Ger-
many.
Architecture for Humanity is currently raising funds to build
one or more prototypes of the winning designs. Once built, the
International Medical Corps, which has 50 doctors serving seven
countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, and the AIDS Research and Fam-
ily Care Clinic, which has six doctors based in Mombasa, Kenya,
have both committed to staff and equip a finished prototype for
testing in the field. The exhibition will include video and pho-
tographic materials documenting their work to treat patients in
Africa's underserved areas.
Former United States President William J. Clinton has called the
initiative "a remarkable project with great possibility." The
project has also garnered praise and support from a number of
U.N. and U.S. ambassadors and from leading architects around the
world.
"From time to time, architecture needs to take a step back. We
need to reexamine not just how we build, but also what we
build," said advisory board member and Pritzker Prize-winning
architect Frank Gehry.
