Beninese Youth Magazine Promotes ABCs of AIDS Prevention

A magazine published by Population Services International (PSI) 
in Benin is educating young people on HIV/AIDS prevention and 
having proven health impact on the behavior of its readers. 
 
Amour & Vie (Love & Life) magazine is targeted at youth and 
blends HIV/AIDS prevention messages with features such as celeb-
rity interviews and contests. PSI began publishing the magazine 
in 1996 and relaunched it in 2002 with three issues devoted to 
the ABCs of HIV/AIDS prevention (Abstinence, Be Faithful and Con-
doms). A survey has shown that reading Amour & Vie resulted in 
positive changes in behaviors, attitudes and knowledge. 
 
Amongst young, educated, urban males, those who had read Amour & 
Vie were three times more likely to have discussed condom use 
with a partner and one-and-a-half times less likely to think that 
using a condom implies a lack of trust. With a circulation of 
over 35,000, Amour and Vie is gaining popularity and will con-
tinue to address crucial topics to Beninese youth.
