Maternal Health: Is there any pre-colonial data?
------------------------------------------------

We all know that there are many reasons that pregnant women liv-
ing in Sub-Saharan Africa are dying a faster rate than anywhere
else in the world.

For instance, there is the complicated education debate: Is the
relationship between maternal mortality and literacy causal?
What is the effect of a woman's education on her age of mar-
riage, and age of first birth? Should Africa's historical reli-
ance on oral traditions (oralcy) play a role in the achievement
of a universal, literate continent? Is there a 'colonial strong-
hold' on today's post-colonial education policies that is af-
fecting health care in Africa?

Though information on pre-colonial history, education and gov-
ernment... are widely available, I have found little information
on pre-colonial maternal mortality (and morbidity). Any sugges-
tions?
