Wife-beating in Zambia a 'natural consequence'
----------------------------------------------
About 80% of Zambian wives find it acceptable to be beaten by
their husbands "as a form of chastisement", according to the lat-
est Zambia Demographic Health Survey.
Out of 5,029 women interviewed countrywide, 79% said they should
be beaten if they went out without their husband's permission.
Sixty-one percent said a beating was acceptable if they denied
their husband's sex, while 45% said a beating was in order if they
cooked "bad" food.

In the light of a recent and similar report from Zimbabwe,
"Zimbabwean women believe wife-beating is OK"
http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/Datelinehealth-Nigeria/message/366
it is fair to ask: Do women across Africa really accept and enjoy
being beaten by their husbands or are they merely entrapped vic-
tims of anachronistic cultures?
