Masters Degree Fellowships

The Graduate School, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of
the Witwatersrand is dedicated to build health research capacity
in South Africa and the SADC region. The School is inviting ap-
plications for master?s level fellowships sponsored by the Bel-
gian Embassy to assist in building research capacity in HIV /
AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria in South Africa and the SADC region.
These fellowships are intended to encourage young scientists and
professionals working at national institutions (Ministries of
Health, Universities and Research Institutions) to be trained in
the field of HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria at the Univer-
sity of the Witwatersrand.
Fellowships are available for applicants interested in post-
graduate training that leads to an MSc MMED, MDENT or MPH de-
gree. Applicants should be eligible to register at one of the
Schools in the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of the
Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa. Applicants are also
eligible to participate in the Research Methodology Training
Course which is part of this training programme.
Applicants are expected to have a good first degree preferably a
minimum of 2.1 degree pass in medicine, dentistry, basic or ap-
plied sciences, biochemistry, immunology or biological sciences.
The thesis, dissertation or research report will be in the field
of HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis or malaria.
FEES:
Each fellowship will cover full tuition (including books),
board, medical insurance, return air-ticket from home country
and normal living expenses for a candidate enrolled into a mas-
ter?s programme of 1-2 years duration. No provision is made for
payment support for dependents.
LIMITED FELLOWSHIPS:
Four fellowships are available beginning 2004 to eligible appli-
cants from South Africa and the SADC region. These will be allo-
cated on a first-come-first-served basis for eligible candi-
dates.
