To minimise HIV/AIDS stigma (3)
-------------------------------

Dear Enamul,

Many thanks for posting this important social issue. As I am
more actively working in the Leprosy programme since 1974, I re-
alised how social stigma, ostracism, wrong notions and fear
among the community members have affected the lives of several
millions of leprosy patients specially associated with leprosy
related disabilities. Since the introduction of Multi Drug Ther-
apy (MDT), the scenario is gradually changing. Even though lep-
rosy can be completely cured with MDT; still, cured leprosy pa-
tients face social stigma in spite of advancements.

HIV/AIDS is another chronic disease, facing similar social re-
sponse in spite of advancements in the treatment with HRT and
knowledge in transmission. Any kind of legal measures in dealing
this issue would only discourage people coming forward voluntar-
ily to VCT as well ART centres. Of course, the affected people
should take the responsibility of practising safe sex so that
virus is not transmitted to others wherever they go.

Social Action groups/Fora of People Living with HIV should ini-
tiate the process of change.

Hope the year 2004 will bring some more hope in the lives of
those who are suffering.

Regards,

Yours sincerely,
