MedSMS: Medical Information/Alert System
----------------------------------------
Dear All,
We have recently launched a low-cost Health Information and
Alert system for professionals using Short Text Message Service
(SMS). This we feel is a new media, given the fact that cell-
phone users outnumber Internet Users in many developing coun-
tries - more so in India and especially among Medical Profes-
sionals. You could visit the prototype of the system online at
http://www.mchcalicut.org/medsms/
mirror at http://www.virtualmedonline.com/medsms
With over 1,590 subscribers in a single month, I am really
amazed how eagerly Medical professionals have turned in to util-
ise the service. The present one is a beta version. We would be
improving the utility shortly by integrating EpiCenter, our own
upcoming Epidemic Info/Alert system.
I would like to see similar services catering to the needs of
health professionals working on diverse themes like HIV/AIDS,
Reproductive Health etc., especially in Africa and Asia. I would
be more than happy to share our resources and expertise (no
strings attached). I would also like to have input from listmem-
bers regarding other prospects of the tool so that we could help
related organisations. Some similar projects are also listed.
If anyone on this list knows of any more projects similar to
ours, I would be happy to put up a detailed description on our
site.
Thanking you,
Dr. Vinod Scaria
