Vacancy: Molecular Biologist (Bacterial Diseases Programme)

MRC Laboratories, The Gambia

Applications are invited from suitably qualified applicants for
a 1-year appointment as a Molecular Biologist. You will be re-
sponsible for carrying out molecular diagnostic research within
the Pneumococcal and HIV/TB Projects and will have a minimum of
5 years experience working in a research laboratory in a senior
role.

We seek someone with:
* PhD in molecular biology, microbiology or chemistry.
* A minimum of 5 years experience working in a research labora-
tory in a senior role, particularly in the handling of microbial
pathogens and in the use of PCR as a diagnostic tool.

* Excellent computer skills (Microsoft Word, Excel, Access)
* Excellent written and spoken English
* Excellent organisational skills
* Excellent communication skills
* Ability to present work and results clearly to both internal
and external parties.
* Willingness to learn new techniques.
* Strong sense of commitment to work.
* Ability to work in a highly disciplined manner in the labora-
tory.
* Ability to supervise staff, ensuring that high standards are
maintained at all times
* Ability to work co-operatively in a team
* Ability to work with minimal supervision following training.

Although not essential, previous experience working with Myco-
bacterium tuberculosis and other Cat III organisms would be an
advantage.

The salary will be in Occupational Group E1/E2 at a minimum to-
tal salary package of 341,978 Dalasis per annum. For displaced
staff the package will include displacement allowances, fur-
nished accommodation, flights, contribution to school fees and
other benefits.
