Thomas Adeoye Lambo, former WHO DDG and psychiatrist is dead (7)
----------------------------------------------------------------
Thanks to Joseph Ana for his words honoring TA Lambo:
> "It is tragic that he who founded the Aro community care ap-
> proach for the > mentally sick in Nigeria in the 1960's, the
> first such approach in Africa, an approach that as you know
> the West (especially the NHS) embarked on in the 1980's,
> should be so uncared for in his last days and hours."
I remember when I was a youngish postdoctoral fellow in the late
1970s, being so inspired by what I read about Dr. Lambo and his
therapeutic community in Aro. I almost persuaded a branch of the
US government to send me there to study how this worked. The
grant didn't come through and I was bitterly disappointed, but I
nevertheless went on to develop my own programs of collaboration
between biomedical and traditional healers in several African
countries including Nigeria, inspired by TA Lambo and pioneers
like the late Mike Warren (himself an honorary chief in both Ni-
geria and Ghana).
Can anyone update me on Aro? Is it still functioning as a thera-
peutic community?
