What it is:
A five day theoretical and practical course on the use of mo-
lecular methods for the detection of pathogens and epidemiologi-
cal investigations.

ogy and Infectious Diseases, University of the Witwatersrand,
Johannesburg, South Africa
Maximum number of participants: Ten

Cost: ZAR 7,000.00 ? approximately US$ 1,000 (includes course,
lunch, teas. Excludes travel, accommodation, breakfast and din-
ner)

Brief review of the course content:
Introduction to methods used for diagnosis and epidemiology of
infectious diseases, traditional micro-organism typing tech-
niques versus molecular methods, outbreak and prevalence stud-
ies, PCR detection of pathogens as well as virulence and resis-
tance determinants, standardisation of methods, use of molecular
methods in the developing world. Two hands-on practical sessions
are planned.
Target group:
Persons with at least a limited molecular background ? Scien-
tists, clinicians, technologists, infection control nurses; any-
one who is interested in molecular techniques for diagnosis and
epidemiology in infectious diseases. A diploma or degree in a
Science, Medicine, Medical Science or related field is required
for acceptance to the course.
Financial assistance:
Note that financial assistance is not available from the Univer-
sity of the Witwatersrand. Applicants are advised to seek sup-
port from other own Institutions or agencies such as UNICEF,
WHO, UNDP, UNESCO or other international programmes.
Accommodation and travel arrangements:
The participants are responsible for their own travel and accom-
modation arrangements. Special rates at a hotel within walking
distance, as well as a hotel shuttle to and from the airport,
are however available.
