Fellowship: Cardiovascular disease in developing countries
----------------------------------------------------------

Lown Fellowship in Cardiovascular Disease in the Developing
World:
A two-year post-doctoral program focusing on non-invasive and
preventive cardiology and public health

The Lown Fellowship in Cardiovascular Disease in the Developing
World prepares physicians from developing countries to address
the mounting epidemic of cardiovascular disease in their home
countries through training in a model of treatment that maxi-
mizes risk factor modification and medical management in order
to minimize intervention. This model of care has been shown to
be more beneficial to patients and is particularly applicable in
low-resource settings such as the developing world, as well as
in resource-rich countries like the US, where it has been prac-
ticed for more than 30 years. The efficacy of this model was re-
cently detailed in a paper published by the American Journal of
Cardiology (Am J Cardiol 2004;93:294-299).

The two-year fellowship program was created by the Lown Cardio-
vascular Center in Brookline, MA, USA in partnership with the
Cardiovascular Division of Brigham and Women's Hospital, and is
affiliated with Harvard Medical School. It is a program of the
Lown Cardiovascular Research Foundation. After completing a two-
year training period in the US, fellows return to their home
countries to incorporate prevention and preventive cardiology
into their practice.

Fellows receive a US$ 40,000 stipend per year and travel to the
US on a J-1 visa. The program is not accredited by the ACGME.
