Call: South-South Initiative for Tropical Diseases Research
-----------------------------------------------------------
Call for Letters of Intent
Application deadline: 5 July 2004
The South-South Initiative (SSI) in tropical diseases research
supported by the UNICEF/UNDP/World Bank/WHO Special Programme
for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases (TDR) was de-
signed to facilitate sharing of resources among research groups
in Latin America, Asia and Africa in order to increase competi-
tiveness and optimize scientific opportunities (http://www.ssi-
tdr.net).
Initiated in 2001, the SSI is now fully operational and managed
by a coordinating committee representing investigators in Af-
rica, Asia and Latin America.
The objectives of the SSI are to:
1) assist the development of collaborative research and training
proposals to be submitted to TDR and/or other funding agencies,
2) promote training and capacity building in cutting-edge tech-
nologies,
3) establish a network of research groups and institutions in
disease-endemic countries.
The SSI coordinating committee is pleased to invite Letters of
Intent for proposals to be considered for funding by the TDR
Steering Committee on Pathogenesis and Applied Genomics (PAG) in
2005 on:
- Collaborative research - preferably intercontinental (Africa,
Asia, Latin America).
- International training workshops - on cutting-edge technolo-
gies applied to tropical diseases research, of 2 weeks duration,
and for delivery to 15-20 international students.
The Letters of Intent (maximum 3 pages) should include the fol-
lowing:
- Collaborative research proposal: CV of the PIs, affiliation,
objectives, relevance to PAG workplan (see
http://www.who.int/tdr/grants/workplans/default.htm), rationale,
methodological approach, activities to be developed by each
group of the partnership, budget.
- Training workshops: details of theoretical and practical ac-
tivities, CVs of the PIs, institution affiliation, information
on available facilities, title of the course, objectives, con-
tents, selection criteria, budget, location, tentative dates.
Letters of Intent should be sent by email to:
Professor Bianca Zingales
Coordinator of the South-South Initiative
mailto:zingales@iq.usp.br
Deadline for submission of the Letters of Intent is July 5,
2004.
Investigators whose Letters of Intent demonstrate potential for
further development to meet competitiveness for funding will be
notified on July 30, 2004 and invited to the Fourth South-South
Initiative Workshop to be held in Accra, Ghana, 18-22 August,
2004.
Further information on the SSI can be obtained from:
