The role of science in development (4)
--------------------------------------

Science is now a necessity in development in the South. For
health, this is even at the turning point now in the era of
AIDS. Drugs for HIV/AIDS treatment are now available in the
highly affected area in the South. But treatment availability is
now a practical issue, the monitoring of treatment, development
of resistance and categorizing patients for cure is a big prob-
lem. A good knowledge in virology, immunology, laboratory tech-
niques and other related knowledge are not available in many
places in the South. Equipment for monitoring drug use is still
a nightmare in those places. This is just an example where sci-
ence may play a big role in development in the South especially
in this deadly disease. Without the necessary science, the im-
pact of introducing ARV may even be worse than the situation
without them.
