A Peep into the Silenced
------------------------
A documentary by Nalini Jameela and SWFK
"A PEEP INTO THE SILENCED" is the second film produced by Sex
Workers Forum Kerala (SWFK), a sex workers organization based in
Kerala, India. SWFK's first film "JWALAMUKHIKAL (A day in the
life of a sex worker)" was released in 2002. Both the films are
part of a series of films in a multi-country project entitled
"Documenting our Lives" coordinated by the Global Alliance
Against Traffic in Women (GAATW), Bangkok, Thailand.
Member organizations of GAATW in Bangladesh, Cambodia, India,
Nepal and Thailand participated in this project during 2001-2004
and learnt to use the video camera to share the stories of their
lives and struggles with a larger public. All the participating
groups are small self-organized groups, except Shakti Samuha,
Nepal (which is a group comprising women who were trafficked
into prostitution)all other groups are sex workers rights groups
trying toassert their human rights in different parts of the
globe.
Nalini Jameela, is the co-ordination committee member of SWFK.
She has been to Thailand to get training in video under GAATW.
The first production of SWFK "A day in the life of a sex worker"
is an eight minute narrative documentary of the life of sex
workers. This was done by the help of professionals and it has
been shown in Thailand in the festival "Documenting our Lives".
It has been screened also in similar festivals and meetings in
New York, San Francisco and Montreal.
"Peep into the Silenced" is a documentary done by Nalini Jameela
on the police torture and the plight of sex workers on the road.
Except for the translation of narrations into English subtitles,
all else was done by Nalini. This is truly her production. So
SWFK consider this as their 'own' production.
Funding support for this innovative project was provided by No-
vib, The Netherlands.
