Article Cited "Sugar Daddy" Phenomenon as Fueling AIDS
------------------------------------------------------

An Associated Press article has reported that the practice of
cross generational sex or the "Sugar Daddy" phenomenon is fuel-
ing the spread of HIV in Africa. The article reports on a satel-
lite session sponsored by Population Services International
(PSI) at the recent International AIDS Conference in Bangkok,
Thailand at which PSI presented research from Kenya, Uganda and
South Africa on the practice - in which men engage in transac-
tional sexual relations with females 10 or more years younger.

PSI media campaigns discourage cross-generational sex, stressing
that it puts the girls, who are already at high risk of HIV in-
fection, in even greater danger. The article got heavy play, ap-
pearing in such newspapers as The New York Times, Los Angeles
Times, Washington Post and The Guardian (U.K.).
