The School of Public Health, University of the Witwatersrand,
Johannesburg, in partnership with the INDEPTH Scientific Devel-
opment and Leadership Programme, invite applications for the new

Master of Science (MSc) in the field of Population-Based Field
Epidemiology

Applications are invited for admission in 2005 to the MSc (Med)
in the field of Population-Based Field Epidemiology. The course
was established in partnership with INDEPTH to develop research,
leadership and IT capacity for Demographic Surveillance Sites
(DSS). Coursework covers five areas: epidemiology and research
methodology, biostatistics and data management, demography, in-
formation technologies for demographic and health surveillance,
and leadership. Certain courses are offered as distance learning
mod ules. A substantial field-based component of the course in-
cludes a guided internship and participation in a research team,
leadership training, and implementation of a research project.

Criteria for admission:
Applicants should have successfully completed a four-year bache-
lors degree or equivalent. Computer literacy, competence in
mathematics, and excellent spoken and written English, is essen-
tial.

Degree Requirements:
include the successful completion of course work, a research re-
port and a field-based attachment

Duration of the degree is 12 months coursework fulltime, begin-
ning the first week of February 2005. There is an additional
six-month field component during which successful applicants
will be placed in one of three accredited DSS sites.

Applications close on 30th September 2004. Early submission of
applications is advisable.

Applications must include:

1) Wits University post-graduate application forms (electronic
forms available on www.wits.ac.za. Go to Postgraduate Studies
and then Health Sciences Faculty).
2) Written motivation by the applicant him/herself, which should
include a description of relevant prior work experience.
3) Two confidential referee reports.
4) Certified copies of prior qualification(s).
5) Certificates of computer courses, English competency or other
relevant training.

Funding

A limited number of fellowships are available through INDEPTH
for potential students currently working in INDEPTH member DSS
sites. All those who satisfy the Wits requirements and wish to
apply for funding should notify INDEPTH immediately they apply
for admission to Wits. For information on INDEPTH Applications
