Africa Losing Nurses to Britain (15)
------------------------------------
I trained as a nurse in the UK and now work in a rural community
in Nigeria. I have sympathies for my friends and colleagues who
are unable/unwilling to return home, and we must respect their
decisions. My case highlights what I see as a growing trend
whereby Africa's nurses in the diaspora are putting back into
Africa resources, that would otherwise not be there if they had
remained in Africa. These resources come in various forms: cash,
equipment, networking for those still at base, Telehealth ac-
cess, etc.
I would like to see a situation where such win-win scenarios are
nurtured and encouraged, thus turning the brain drain into brain
gain. Returning to Africa is just not an option for most nurses
who drained out, but their stay abroad can be turned into a
valuable resource to develop infrastructure in their home clin-
ics, hospitals, etc.
