FEWS NET Notification - Burkina Faso

Dear Colleagues

I am on the mailing list of the Famine Early Warning System Net-
work... and am curious to know a lot more about the impact of
this program. I have worked from time to time in famine situa-
tions in Africa going back to the 1980s, and my impression was
that we knew quite a lot about the fact that there was a crop
problem, and a shortage of food - but there was a lack of pro-
gramming to solve the problem.

Whatever happened to the food security initiatives of the 1980s
in Africa? Why does such a rich continent have such poverty and
hunger? Does the FEWS NET help to get at the root causes of the
poverty and hunger crisis in Africa? How should a program be ex-
panded so that it does more than just advise that a problem ex-
ists, and actually get into ways to solve the problem?

I would be interested in learning more what everyone thinks
about this... not to mention the people at FEWS NET. It seems
that food in Africa is another area of failed development.
