FEWS NET Notification - Burkina Faso (2)
----------------------------------------
My membership of FEWS NET was triggered by the recent and ongo-
ing famine in Kenya. The graphic television pictures only elic-
ited the Why question. Why was Africa always caught by surprise
when these events happen? The events are well documented with a
good degree of predictability, but the response seems to always
come too late to save lives.
The Kenyan diaspora made spirited efforts to send relief, and my
concern was whether such efforts will part of a sustainable
strategy that will prevent/alleviate such periodic disasters.
I expect that Peter also means that views expressed will also
look at what organizations and structures are there on the
ground, what are they doing that can be further strengthened,
and what are the ways NOT to go about solving this problem. I am
keen to learn from members who have more experience and insight
into these issues.
