-------------------------------------------------------------

Gallaudet University & Howard University to sponsor Interna-
tional Conference on Deaf Women and HIV/AIDS in Africa

Gallaudet University and Howard University will sponsor an in-
ternational conference on Deaf Women and HIV/AIDS in Africa on
June 10-12, 2005 at the Gallaudet University Kellogg Center. A
Call for Proposals has been issued with a deadline of December
10, 2005. Individuals will be notified of their acceptance by
February 11, 2005.

The purpose of the conference is to increase awareness of the
importance of reaching all segments of the African population in
the fight against HIV/AIDS. A special focus will be to identify
effective ways to reach and communicate with deaf women in Af-
rica who have HIV/AIDS.

Participants will include representatives from deaf organiza-
tions, higher education institutions from the US and abroad,
government and non-government agencies, and public and private
health organizations. Recommendations from the conference will
include the development of an agenda for combating the HIV/AIDS
crises, particularly as it affects deaf women, including new and
enhanced research initiatives and improved health care.

Participants will be expected to return to their home countries
and to work with their governments, national government organi-
zations, educational institutions, and health care organizations
to improve the plight of HIV/AIDS affected populations, particu-
larly those women suffering with the disease within deaf commu-
nities.
