Securing the Future for Southern Africa: Perspectives on
HIV/AIDS and the World of Work
--------------------------------------------------------

23 - 25 November, 2004
Hotel Safari & Conference Centre
Windhoek, Namibia

Over the past two and a half decades every country, community or
sector has been affected by the HIV/AIDS epidemic. The epidemic
has influenced the social, cultural and economic environment.
Increased costs associated with medical aid/health insurance,
payouts such as death benefits, life insurance, labour turnover
and additional training expenses are just some of the direct
HIV/AIDS related issues facing the world of work today.

As a social and economic institution, the workplace can play a
crucial role in preventing the spread of HIV and offering care,
treatment and support services to workers, their families and
surrounding communities. The workplace provides a conducive en-
vironment for implementing HIV and AIDS programmes that may en-
able workers to make informed decisions.

Setting up effective workplace programmes cost organisations or
companies far less than the rising costs of supporting AIDS re-
lated social and medical problems. It is against this background
that the Southern Africa HIV/AIDS Information Dissemination Ser-
vice (SAfAIDS) is inviting you or a representative of your or-
ganisation to a regional symposium focusing on 'Securing the Fu-
ture for Southern Africa: Perspectives on HIV/AIDS and the World
of Work.' from 23 to 25 November 2004 at Hotel Safari in Wind-
hoek, Namibia.

The Symposium aims at providing a platform for sharing experi-
ences and challenges in managing HIV/AIDS in the workplace as
well as good practices in the corporate sector. It will also
provide a friendly and relaxed environment to discuss critical
issues around HIV/AIDS wellness management in the workplace.
Parallel sessions will be conducted to allow participants to fo-
cus on their areas of interest. Participants will be expected to
pay for their travel and accommodation. The organizers will pro-
vide meals for the participants. English shall be the official
language of the symposium. Kindly complete the registration form
attached and return it to SAfAIDS by the 31st of October 2004.
We are anticipating 100 participants for the symposium. Space
will be allocated on 'first come, first served basis'.

Yours sincerely

Dr Nyasha Madzingira
